Green Tea Info
from: Mark Mayell's book: Natural Energy
Green Tea
is made from the same plants and leaves as black tea but it is processed in a way that
prevents fermentation.
"Buddhist
monks also recognized tea as a useful beverage for staying awake during long periods of
meditation. Tea allowed meditators to attain an apparently contradictory state: Tranquil
yet alert, relaxed yet focused."
Coffee: 540-75 mgs
of caffeine per cup
Green Tea: 20-30
mgs of caffeine per cup
Green tea has a
higher concentration of theophylline than any other plant. While theophylline can boost
the heart rate and stimulate the CNS, possibly to even a greater degree than caffeine
does, theophylline is present in tea in much lower amounts than caffeine. The amount of
theophylline in a cup of tea is less than 1 mg and has no physiological effect.
Green tea awakens
the mind and refreshes the spirit. Successive cups have cumulative gradations of effect,
not just greater and greater stimulation.
Green Tea: Cerebral
Coffee: Physical
activity.
Green tea has
polyphenols and catechins which are potent antioxidants and are safe and non-toxic. Drink
5-10 cups per day. Only brew green tea for 2-3 minutes to avoid bitterness and use only
small amounts of tea as the benefits are still available with weaker tea. Adding milk to
green tea reduces the benefit of the polyphenols. Green tea helps blood pressure
imbalances. Green tea aids weight loss. Decaffeination of green tea may remove the
polyphenols. Also, never drink tea scalding hot as this may damage the esophageal tract.
